P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program Celebrates World Water Day in Myanmar

By contributing 750,000 days of clean drinking water to transform lives in needs.

Yangon, Myanmar, Procter & Gamble (P&G) and its international partners will celebrate the 25th anniversary of World Water Day in an effort to do their part to help end the global water crisis. Through the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program, more than 15 countries will deploy campaigns designed to raise awareness to further CSDW’s ability to bring clean drinking water to those who do not have access.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has been standing in Myanmar as respected corporation which is helping to improve Myanmar people lives with its trusted and quality brands. Moreover, P&G and its esteemed partners celebrate their 4th year of 10 Merits of donating water (or ‘Yay A Jo Sal Parr’) campaign together with World Water Day, to transform lives through power of clean water.

According to official figures from the Myanmar Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), around 20% of Myanmar children dying under the age of five die from diarrhea – twice as much as global average and around the same as in Sub-Saharan Africa where water is often scarce[1].

With a support by Myanmar people, P&G will donate one day of clean drinking water for every P&G product purchased during May-June at our key retailers including City Mart and Ocean. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds to contribute 750,000 days of clean drinking water through World Vision Myanmar. Last year, the program has delivered 200 million liters of clean water during the flood relief effort in Myanmar.

U.S. Ambassador, Mr. Scot Marciel said, “We congratulate Procter & Gamble for their continued efforts in improving health & hygiene for the fourth consecutive year in Myanmar through their ’10 Merits of Donating Water’ program. This will help transform the lives of many communities in Myanmar by making clean drinking water accessible”.

Director U Aung Ko Latt, Academy awarded and famous film maker said he has been supporting P&G clean water donation program of “10 Merits of Donating Clean Water” for four years and very proud to participate in this campaign to support the lives of Myanmar People.

Mr. Raffy Fajardo, Managing Director, Procter and Gamble Thailand, Myanmar and Laos said, “P&G is proud and honored to celebrate this fourth year of “10 Merits of Water Donation” Campaign and World Water Day. P&G has been continuously and successfully implementing this campaign. We believe that this will help Myanmar People to get access to clean drinking water and promote health, hygiene and improve the quality of life. We would like to express our gratitude, for the successful collaboration, to many partners including the Myanmar government, Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC), Public Health, the U.S. government, media, local business partners and non-profit-organization – World Vision Myanmar and our precious volunteer - for their continuous support to provide P&G purification packets for emergency relief in major natural disasters in Myanmar”.

"World Vision has been working in partnership with P&G providing clean and purified water in emergencies since 2008. Together we continue to ensure the Health and Well Being of Children and Families in Myanmar during the time of greatest need. We look forward to building on this collaboration for greater impact." Said Moe Thu, Associate Director - Humanitarian & Emergency Affairs, World Vision International - Myanmar.

In 2004, P&G created the CSDW Program to provide clean drinking water to those who lacked it. P&G scientists used cleaning technology research to invent the P&G Purifier of Water packets in partnership with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Company, which has a strong history of innovation with brands such as Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Arial, Gillette etc, used its innovative capability to pack the power of a water treatment plant into a small four gram sachet. The technology is simple to use, with only a bucket, a spoon, a cloth and a small P&G packet, people can purify 10 liters of dirty, potentially deadly water in only 30 minutes providing enough drinking water for a family of five for one day.

About P&G’s Children Safe Drinking Water Program in Myanmar

P&G has a long history of improving lives in Myanmar, beginning with relief efforts post Cyclone Nargis (2008), providing more than 30 million liters of clean drinking water to disaster victims with multiple partners. Since 2011, P&G has worked in partnership with World Vision and the 6 billionth liter of clean water provided by the CSDW Program was donated by Chelsea Clinton to a family in Myanmar.  Understanding the richness of heritage and culture of the people of Myanmar, Yay A Jo Say Pa campaign was created in 2014 with the intention of consumers not only to purchase P&G products but also a chance to receive 10 merits of donating clean water for every unit purchased at the same time.  Through this latest campaign, P&G aims to donate 750,000 days of drinking water along with training session, health and hygiene promotion for mothers and children through World Vision Myanmar in 2017.
