อัมสเตอร์ดัม, 3กรกฎาคม 2566 เอสซีจี เคมิคอลส์ หรือ เอสซีจีซี (SCGC) ธุรกิจเคมีภัณฑ์ครบวงจรเพื่อความยั่งยืนระดับภูมิภาค ร่วมกับ บริษัท Avantium N.V. ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเทคโนโลยีด้านเคมีทดแทน (renewable chemistry) จากประเทศเนเธอร์แลนด์  เดินหน้าพัฒนานวัตกรรมเพื่อมุ่งหน้าสู่ความเป็นกลางทางคาร์บอน โดยทดสอบนำก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ (CO₂) มาเป็นสารตั้งต้นสำหรับผลิตพอลิเมอร์ PLGA หรือ พอลิเมอร์ที่คาร์บอนฟุตพริ้นท์เป็นลบ (carbon-negative plastic) โดยไม่ปล่อยก๊าซคาร์บอนฯ ในกระบวนการผลิต พร้อมเร่งเตรียมพัฒนาโรงงานนำร่องด้วยกำลังการผลิตกว่า 10 ตันต่อปี

ดร.สุรชา อุดมศักดิ์ รองผู้จัดการใหญ่ และประธานเจ้าหน้าที่สายงานนวัตกรรม บริษัท เอสซีจี เคมิคอลส์ จำกัด (มหาชน) หรือ SCGC เปิดเผยว่า “SCGC มีแนวทางการพัฒนานวัตกรรมที่มุ่งเน้นไปยังกลุ่มสินค้าและบริการที่มีมูลค่าเพิ่ม (High Value Added Products & Services – HVA) รวมไปถึงการพัฒนา นวัตกรรมรักษ์โลก (Green Innovation) เช่น พอลิเมอร์ที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมตามหลักเศรษฐกิจหมุนเวียน ภายใต้แบรนด์ SCGC Green Polymer และนวัตกรรมที่ตอบโจทย์ด้านคาร์บอนต่ำ (Low Carbon) และเทคโนโลยีในการลดคาร์บอน (Decarbonization) โดยมีเป้าหมายลดการปล่อยก๊าซเรือนกระจกลง 20% ของปีฐาน 2564 ภายในปี 2573  และมุ่งหน้าสู่ความเป็นกลางทางคาร์บอน ทั้งนี้ SCGC ได้เร่งพัฒนานวัตกรรมร่วมกับองค์กรและสถาบันชั้นนำต่าง ๆ ของโลก

ซึ่งล่าสุด SCGC ได้ร่วมกับ Avantium พัฒนาพอลิเมอร์ PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid: PLGA)  หรือ พอลิเมอร์คาร์บอนฟุตพริ้นท์เป็นลบ (carbon-negative plastic)  โดยนำเอาก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์มาใช้เป็นสารตั้งต้น รวมทั้งไม่ปล่อยก๊าซคาร์บอนฯ ในกระบวนการผลิต นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่า พอลิเมอร์ PLGA ซึ่งมีส่วนผสมของกรดแลคติกและไกลโคลิค นอกจากจะมีประสิทธิภาพที่ดีมีคุณสมบัติพิเศษในการป้องกันออกซิเจน ความชื้น และรีไซเคิลได้นั้น ยังสามารถย่อยสลายได้ทั้งในสภาวะธรรมชาติ  และในทะเลอีกด้วย ซึ่งตอบโจทย์ทั้งภาคอุตสาหกรรมและการดูแลสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างยั่งยืน”

AMSTERDAM, 3 July 2023 – SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited or SCGC, a leading integrated chemical player in Asia andan innovator of chemical innovations and solutions, announces that it has agreed to partner with Avantium N.V., a leading technology provider in renewable chemistry from Netherlands. Under this partnership, SCGC and Avantium agreed to drive carbon neutrality by further developing CO₂ into PLGA or carbon-Negative plastic and scale-up to a pilot plant with an indicative capacity of 10 tonnes per annum.

Avantium is a frontrunner in developing and commercialising innovative technologies for the production of chemicals and materials based on sustainable carbon feedstocks, i.e. carbon from plants or carbon from the air (CO₂). The technology platforms, called Volta Technology, uses electrochemistry to convert CO₂ to high-value products and chemical building blocks including glycolic acid. By combining glycolic acid with lactic acid, the company can produce PLGA, a carbon-negative polymer with valuable characteristics: it has an excellent barrier against oxygen and moisture, has good mechanical properties, is recyclable and is both home compostable and marine degradable. This makes PLGA a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

Since early 2023, SCGC and Avantium have been working together to further evaluate PLGA. To this end, Avantium has produced samples of different PLGAs, which have been evaluated at SCGC’s Norner AS facility. The two parties have now agreed to take the next step in their cooperation and establish a Joint Development Agreement. Under this agreement, SCGC and Avantium intend to further evaluate PLGA in order to subsequently scale up production of glycolic acid monomer and PLGA polyester in the next two years to a pilot plant.
